The species Hylaeus navai, scientifically described in 2024, is estimated to have lost 99% of its population over 150 years. Researchers say it should be classified as critically endangered and aim to train students in Fiji to monitor it.
A new California law allows fostering or adoption procedures to move forward for abused animals held as evidence in criminal cases. The aim is to limit their months-long stays in shelters, which harm their welfare and put pressure on already crowded facilities.
Two juvenile humpback whales that had become stuck on sandbars off Fire Island returned to open water. In one case, the rising tide and care from response crews helped the animal, which eventually freed itself.
Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef is once again filled with vegetation and seabirds after decades of work to repair the damage caused by guano mining. Replanting has been completed across about 70% of its area, but tackling non-native plants remains an ongoing task.
An experiment at a Spanish wind farm recorded almost 74% fewer annual bird deaths at turbines where one blade was painted black, compared with those that remained white. The intervention could reduce collisions, but results from other studies vary and trials remain small in scale.
Researchers have described a new, nonvenomous snake species in the forested mountains of southern Ethiopia, Dasypeltis albigularis. The discovery adds a species to the region's recorded biodiversity, where the killing of snakes by people remains its main threat.
Wildfires and prolonged drought in western Borneo are leaving animals without fresh water, with organizations recording deaths and dozens of orangutan rescues. Saltwater intrusion is also straining coastal communities' water supplies and threatening crops.
Researchers at Hawaiʻi Pacific University published a study on microbiome succession in yellow tang larvae, showing that it changes significantly with development and diet.
To mark World Octopus Day on 8 October, Mongabay brings together discoveries made this year: a possibly giant fossil octopus, developing embryos in Patagonia and a new species in the Galápagos.
Derek Muller from Veritasium visits laboratories studying spider silk, tests its strength against steel and Kevlar, and explores how genetically modified silkworms could produce it on a large scale.
A Chicago resident turned her home’s yards into a refueling stop for migrating monarch butterflies and expanded her work to schools and community spaces. The effort to restore their habitats offers a practical response to the steep decline in their populations.
In April 2026, Brazil banned imports of meat from endangered sharks, but angelsharks of the genus Squatina are still sold freely in southern markets and appear in recent public tenders; weak enforcement and the generic label “cação” conceal the illegal trade.
