Kavita, a 39-year-old daily wage laborer from Soso village in the Dulmi area of Ramgarh, Jharkhand, ran 1,600 meters barefoot in a saree in a trial run for Home Guard posts. She completed the course in 6 minutes and 45 seconds, well within the qualifying time of 8 minutes, with the sole aim of securing a job and supporting her two children.
Recruitment for 284 Home Guard posts in Ramgarh district is scheduled from October 24 to November 5. According to the report, 50% of the posts are reserved for women, with an additional 5% for widows and divorced women. A local academy organized a 1,600-meter trial run at the district stadium so candidates could assess their readiness; the general time limit was 10 minutes and the qualifying time was 8 minutes.
Kavita is a widow raising two children on her own — her son in seventh grade and her daughter in eighth — while also caring for her in-laws. After her husband died when she was still young, she was left to keep the family going as best she could. Her earnings from daily work are small, and she says competing for a Home Guard post gives her hope of escaping the cycle of deprivation.
She explains that her dream of wearing the uniform and serving as a Home Guard was not something she developed only when times grew hard. It had always been on her mind. She has completed secondary school and says she never stopped dreaming of the uniform, even when the pressures of daily life weighed on her.
Her day begins at 3 a.m., when she goes with her children to a nearby field to train. She then does the housework before going to her daily wage job. Organized training sessions take place farther away, making it impossible for her to attend, so she chooses the nearby field. After the run, she spoke breathlessly but said she was optimistic that she would succeed.
Her feet have been injured from running without shoes, but she says it is something she can bear. The sight of her running barefoot in a saree showed how strongly she wants to create an identity for herself and a future for her children. Her exhausted body carried her to the end of the course, as the report describes.
She was not the only one running in a saree. Many women took part in the trial in sarees, while some wore standard sportswear. Most had neither suitable equipment nor regular training, but they were optimistic and took part after finishing their housework, while some left chores on hold until the run was over.
Kavita’s case illustrates something broader: how a public sector job can offer a way out for people living at the poverty line, and how policies such as reserving posts for widows and divorced women generate enthusiasm and participation. The final test has yet to take place, but the trial run showed her determination to seek something better for her family.
